Advanced Tips

Data accurate through version 1.0.3.

Here are some useful things to know for people who already have the basics down.

Species Relations

If you have an item in your exosuit inventory that relates to the race you're interacting with (for instance, a Vy'keen Dagger while speaking to the Vy'keen), there's a chance the creature you are speaking with may give you something in exchange for the item you hold.

Propelled Floating

There's a way to move significantly faster -- shaving 40% of the time you waste playing the game while simultaneously getting you closer to that "distance traveled" achievement.

  1. Start sprinting.
  2. Press "melee" and then immediately...
  3. release "melee" and engage your jet pack all in one motion.
  4. Continue to engage the jet pack and you will "float" or "fly" across the immediate area.
  5. Note: Remember not to fly too high or you'll severely injure yourself when you fall from the sky.

Lower Level Looting

Trading posts have two levels:

  1. the upper level, which is way above the patrols of the sentinels below where you can buy and sell goods at a terminal, meet a local, and interface with dozens of pilots as they come and go, and
  2. the lower level, which consists of two small platforms halfway between the upper level and the ground.

Nine times out of ten, this upper level is completely empty -- there solely to aid people on the ground who need to jet pack up top. However, occasionally these platforms hold randomly spawned containers. So it's always good to look down from the upper deck to see if there's extra loot.

Long Distance Travel

If you need to travel a long distance, hop back into space, engage your super-speedy space engines until you're over the target, and then come in from above. Because the game procedurally generates the planet on the fly, you won't be "missing" anything you would have found on the ground.

Ship Hunting

If you're in the market for a ship, carry around enough iron to repair an engine and then look for "distress calls" at observation stations. They'll lead you to crashed ships that you can take and repair for free. Just remember to move your inventory before taking the new ship or you'll lose your stuff. Also, make sure you aren't on a planet with hostile sentinels or your minutes will be numbered.

Word Mining

Every planet has at least one thing it spawns a ton of. More often then not, it's something we're not looking for like zinc or carbon. However, occasionally you will find a planet that spawns tons of knowledge stones. This is a great opportunity to farm TONS of words. When you recognize that you are on such a planet, use the beacons to locate ruins and monoliths. Each location will have the three stones it always has plus additional stones that fill up your dictionary fast.

Away Sentinel

You can run around your ship to avoid the gaze of a sentinel. It will eventually tire of the chase and float away.
