Ship Procurment

Data accurate through version 1.0.3.

At the start of the game, you'll be given a standard ship with about 15 inventory slots. You'll soon find that this is woefully inadequate and you'll want to upgrade to a better ship. Here's what you need to know.

How to Find a New Ship

There are two ways to obtain a new ship in No Man's Sky.

  • By far the most common way of obtaining a new ship is to purchase one from a landing pad. This can be done at either a space station on on a landing pad on a planet (say at a trading hub). You simply wait for a ship to land, walk up to the cockpit, interact with it, speak to its captain, and then decide if the price is right for you.
  • You can simply find an abandoned ship that has crashed on a planet, claim it, fix it up using elements in the area or from your inventory, and fly away with it.

Ship Pricing Considerations

The price of a ship seems to be slightly affected by the following:

  • Cultural standing with the species of pilot
  • The value of the equipment on new ship
  • The condition of the equipment on new ship
  • Random number variation
  • Location of Sale (sales while "on planet" are more expensive than those at a space station)

Sold Ship Losses

When selling your ship, there are two things to keep in mind.

  1. No matter what the value is of your current ship, it will in no way apply to the cost to purchase the new ship.
  2. If you fail to move your inventory over to the new ship prior to pushing the "purchase" button (not the "compare" button), then that inventory will be lost.

Ship Availability

At the start of the game, 40-slot monster ships are invisible to you. You've got to earn such a beast. Instead, you'll have 15 slots in your ship and meet other ships which have at most 24 slots. Once you have a ship with more slots, other higher-slot ships will become available.

Expected Ship Pricing Chart

The following data is based on personal observations and careful records of ship selling events. The lowest observed price (LOP) and highest observed price (HOP) give you an idea of how much fluctuation can occur. Both of these values are in units. All data provided from planets on the outer rim.
